RHS HITS THE GROUND RUNNING FOR OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

Written by Lorraine Maalouf - Teacher

Rosemount High School’s outdoor track and field team kicked off the season with a strong start in early May. The students, boys and girls ranging from secondary 1 through secondary 5, competed in events such as the 200m race, 80m hurdle, endurance races, javelin throw, discus toss, shot put, and high jump.

The coaches Ms. Zagury and Ms. Maalouf are immensely proud of the young athletes. Some students were competing for the first time in track and field events while others have had years of experience. Nonetheless, they all worked together as a team, motivated each other, and supported each other to get to finish line. Their hard work and perseverance has paid off, as Amanda Berger and Kayla Buckingham both received silver medals in the Midget Girls’ division. Josue Romero and Tommy Rousseau earned the Bantam Boys’ team gold and silver medals, respectively. As part of the Midget Boys’ team, Matteo Barroso Riccardi earned a bronze medal. Lastly, Oliver Morancy took home a gold medal for the Juvenile Boys’ team in his last year of high school. All of these students will be representing Rosemount High School at various events at the upcoming Provincial competition in June.

The qualifying meets were held at the Raymond Bourque Arena during the first two weeks in May. The championship round took place the following week.

The girls all exhibited great teamwork and perseverance despite the cold and rainy weather conditions on their meet day. Erika Baker, Karley Babanicos, Stephanie Donnici, and Joyce Osagie qualified for the Bantam Girls’ championships with the 200m race, the 80 m hurdles, and the 4 x 100 relay. Amanda Berger, Victoria Bortkiewicz, Kayla Buckingham, and Elhanah Otasowie all qualified for the Midget Girls’ championships competing in the 100 m race, 200 m race, 400 m race, high jump event, 1500 m endurance run, javelin throw event, shot put event, and discus throw event. Vera Marie Kerschbaumer and Eliana Marra qualified for the Juvenile Girls’ championship by competing in the shot put, discus throw, javelin throw, 100 m and 800 m races, 100 m hurdles, and the triple and long jump events.

The boys also did very well. In the Bantam Boys’ division, Francis Berrafato, Nelso Massa, Jason Libertella, Logan Millan, Robbie Wong, Josue Romero, and Tommy Rousseau qualified for the Championships in the 100 m, 200 m, and 800 m race, high jump, shot put, and the 4 x 100 relay events. Matteo Barroso Riccardi, Haivien Desir, Eric Fillion, and Domenico Martinez qualified for the Midget Boys’ Championships with the 1500 m endurance race, shot put throwing, and javelin throwing events. Finally, Maureese Davidson, Jason Kovac, and Oliver Morancy qualified for the Juvenile Boys’ Championships in the 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, and 800 m races as well as in the high jump and long jump events.
